History

My name is Jennelle Zajac – I’m running for a seat on Parowan’s City Council. I’ve lived in Parowan full-time since 2015 and was an every-weekend resident of my home here since 2007. I lived and worked in Las Vegas and fell in love with this area while spending summers with my family at Duck Creek. I worked at the Nevada Test Site for 30 years as a secretary, technical writer, project manager, quality assurance analyst and corporate trainer. I also worked at Nevada Power Company as a generation analyst for seven years. I have a Master’s Degree in business and love using my skills to research and analyze processes and systems. My husband and I retired and have found peace and friendship here and have made Parowan our forever home. If elected, I will work to communicate regularly with residents to ensure their voices are heard and help to manage growth while keeping Parowan’s small-town character. I’m a hard worker and I’ll do my part to research issues and make informed decisions for the residents of Parowan!

About Jennelle

I’m a fourth generation native Hawaiian. My great grandfather, a true pioneer, was born in Hawaii after his parents emigrated there from Portugal. When he was in 8th grade, his family returned to Portugal. He loved Hawaii so much that he found work on a returning ship and went back to Hawaii on his own (as an 8th grader!). He eventually became a Honolulu police officer. The day Pearl Harbor was bombed, he moved the family to a ranch in the mountains for the duration of the war.

I was born in Hawaii, lived in San Diego CA until I was twelve, and moved to Pahrump Nevada to finish growing up. I attended the University of Nevada-Reno and moved to Las Vegas in 1983. I started raising a family there and stayed until 2015 when my husband Larry and I retired to live in Parowan. Together we have 5 children and 12 grandchildren, with another grandson coming on September 19 and a great-grandson coming in late October.

Priorities

To control and manage inevitable growth

Utah is the of the fastest growing states in the nation because of its scenic beauty, its fast-growing economy, and friendly, helpful residents. People are migrating to the southwest from all over the country. Parowan is particularly attractive for those desiring a small town feel with four seasons. Current city initiatives like Rural Done Right and the Title 7 of Parowan’s municipal code on water go a long way to control growth.

To increase transparency and communication

The current Mayor and Council have worked HARD to improve transparency and communication over the last 3-1/2 years and I think more can be done to help citizens feel their voices are heard. Additional Town Hall meetings and a newsletter in each resident’s mailbox are a couple initiatives that come to mind.

To update and bring awareness to our Parowan City General Plan and municipal code

The city staff works hard to create and update ordinances but many are still out of date or contain errors. The General Plan, the document by which all Parowan’s strategies and goals reside, hasn’t been updated since 2021. I would encourage updating of these documents and will volunteer to lead the effort using them as reference when making decisions for the residents.

To encourage more budget and spending awareness

Historically the budget is largely developed and controlled by the City Manager with presentations given to council members for consideration and approval each year. I would like to be more engaged in budget discussions, analyze it more deeply, and encourage questions regarding spending rather than just approving every spending request.
